One Room Challenge: Week 2 - Tips on Tile
It's Week 2 of the One Room Challenge and I can confidently say things are moving along smoothly, well smoother than the last time I did a laundry room for the One Room Challenge (you may remember, during demo I accidentally ripped off the entire wall, my husband wasn't happy lol, see more here). This week we installed the floor tile, it was quick and easy (phewf). There were a few things I learned along the way so I thought I'd share my tile tips below.
Tip #1: Measure and add 20%
Measure your space and add 20% for unexpected and waste. Also, be sure to get appliances removed prior to installing the tile. This may seem obvious but I have heard of some people tile around existing appliances.
Tip #2: Use Ditra
While ceramic and stone tiles are durable, easy to maintain and
hygenic if the surface you are installing them on is wonky it could make
the installation of the tile to be compromised. Adding a Ditra sub-layer uncouples the floor from the tile (preventing cracking), waterproofs the floor, helps with load-distribution, and vapor management. Ditra is specifically designed to allow the installation of ceramic and stone tile over any even and load-bearing substrate.
Tip #3: Pick Large Tiles for Floors
Whether you're using ceramic or stone tile I suggest using a larger size tile for floors. We've used smaller tile on previously on bathrooms and entryways and I found dust collects in the nooks and crannies regardless of how well you install the grout. We selected this awesome 12x12 black and white marble tile from The Home Depot (the black was on clearance so that was a bonus).
I hope you’ve found these tips helpful. Next week we will be installing our new washer and dryer and counter top.
