As promised, here is the second option for the Ikea Kura bed hack aka boys canopy bed. This Ikea Kura bunk bed makeover option 2 includes a ball and feels more like a safari bed because the roof is open. Which one do you like better? Option 1 or Option 2? Personally I prefer Option 2 but my son really liked the full canopy and he played too much with the ball. Speaking of the ball, I made it! You can find the DIY instructions below.
I bought two hanging baskets from the dollarstore, removed the hooks and took out the oasis.
I attached the two sides with tape first, then with wire and removed the tape.
This wire is green because I didn't have black but you can find it at your craft store.
I used pliers to attached the chains together and hang the ball from the ceiling.

Love this! Curious what mattress you used?
ReplyDeleteWe got a twin foam mattress from JYSK. We could have got one at IKEA but they were on sale at JYSK at the time.
DeleteDid it naturally just sit lower than the mattress in the IKEA pictures? Thinking of purchasing this bed and like the idea of the mattress sitting in the bed so it's lower for my 2 year old
ReplyDeleteYes, so, in the IKEA pictures the mattress is sitting slats supported by a frame that you screw on around the top of the box. I decided to forgo this step and put the wood slats on the floor with the mattress on top. It's perfect for a little one because it has a "crib" feel. Caution though, I had to put the fur over the edges because he bonked his head a few times. Hope that helps : )
DeleteWith the way this is situated and of course turned around for the ladder to be facing out, is it still possible to add a top bunk bed? Im wanting the bottom for my 11 month old and the top for my 3 year old. I LOVE all that you did. This is exactly what ive been wanting to do so it would still have a little of an enclosed feel for him.
ReplyDeleteIm not sure if my comment got deleted or not, but I was curious if the the bed is in the exact reversed position you have it in, if you can still add a top bunk bed? I haven't seen many use this position and still have the top bunk, but id like it that way because I would like my 11 month old to still feel enclosed a tad. I love the room, you did an amazing job!
ReplyDeleteHmm, I don't think it got deleted, it may be on the other option. In any case, thank you for your comment! Unfortunately, you can't add a top bunk to this position. The only way to have a top bunk is to flip the whole bed frame over, put a mattress on top and a mattress on the floor. It wouldn't have the frame around the bottom that you like for your 11 month old but perhaps you could put some sort of bed rail around the bottom mattress. Hope this was helpful :)
DeleteThank you, I certainly wasn't thinking you had deleted it ;) Just figured I had somehow malfunctioned lol Thank you for getting back to me. My first son moved to a full sized panel bed without noodles, or a bed rail or anything and he did just fine at a year old. They have tried sleeping together but my little one just tries to party and my eldest gets frustrated with him hahaha. So im thinking Bunk beds are the answer for this age. =) My husband is probably going to build one for me but the Ikea Kura has been my inspiration.
DeleteHi ! Just wondering is the mattress 6 or 8 inches ? Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteHi from Portugal :) Quick question, I want to buy this bed for my son, but I would like to paint in grey... I was wondering igf you painted the bed before the "ensemble" or after it was all ready to use?
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
I painted it before I assembled it. Be sure to give it a sand and primer. Good luck :)
